How Are You Using QR Codes?

Have you noticed those square bar codes on ads lately? They’re called quick response codes, and they’re free to create through various Web sites (try www.qrstuff.com or qrcode.kaywa.com). When you create the bar code, you give it a destination URL; as smartphone users scan the code with their phone’s camera, they’re automatically taken there. 

Many real estate practitioners are finding QR codes to be a useful marketing tool, especially with tech-savvy consumers. TIP: Some smartphones have built-in QR code readers. Otherwise, you can download a reader free from your phone’s app market or sites such as BeeTagg, ScanLife, NeoReader, QuickMark, UpCode, MobileTag, or Zxing.

As an intriguing leave-behind

"I have a QR code on the back of my business card that takes people to a video. I leave my card at properties that I show and hand them out to my customers, new prospects, and businesses. The [QR code] makes the card come alive. There’s a testimonial video for me right on my card. It’s a great way for me to market and promote myself. I constantly hear, 'So, this takes you to a video?! Wow, that is so neat!'"

On yard signs.

"QR codes will become mainstream as more people use iPhones, Androids, and BlackBerrys. Just look at any of the recent ads from Best Buy and even Sears. They’re using QR codes to market their products. We’re putting them on yard signs to direct people to virtual tours. Instead of typing in the URL, they can just scan the bar code with their smartphone."

"QR codes bring new life to our tired old print marketing. Most of the feedback I’ve heard centers around the wow factor. Sellers always want the latest and greatest tools to market their home. QR codes are free and easy to make, so it’s sort of a no-brainer. Send consumers to your Facebook business page, your Twitter profile, a Foursquare venue, or a testimonial video on your YouTube channel—the options are endless. But if you’re going to use QR codes, make sure you can explain how they work to consumers, and keep it simple. For example say: 'Download a free QR code reader to your smartphone; open it and point your smartphone camera at the QR code, and you’re taken directly to my site.'"
