More Than 350 Homes Destroyed in Colorado Wildfires

Firefighters continue to fight to control Colorado’s wildfires, which engulfed nearly 350 homes on 34 streets in Colorado Springs on Thursday, CNN reports.

Police and rescuers will continue to search destroyed homes on Friday to make sure no one remained inside.

So far, the Waldo Canyon Fire has destroyed more than 18,000 acres in Colorado and has left more than 36,000 people running from their homes as the fires neared. Colorado Springs fire Chief Richard Brown called the wildfires a “firestorm of epic proportions.” It could be until mid-July before the fire is fully under control, the U.S. Forest Service has predicted.

The wildfire has hit close to Colorado landmarks, such as Pikes Peak and the Garden of Gods, which has remained closed as the blaze destroyed homes nearby. The wildfire burned southwest portions of the Air Force Academy’s main campus, prompting more than 600 families living on base and 110 dormitory residents to be evacuated.

"It's just really devastating to see that landscape completely charred and people's homes lost," Heather Gardner a Castle Rock resident told CNN.

The flames came dangerously close to the Air Force Academy's main campus, burning about 10 acres of its southwest portion before it was contained, the academy said Thursday.
