5 Ways to Make Health an Office Priority

Long workdays, unhealthy eating habits, and inadequate sleep can take its toll on high-performing real estate pros. As a company leader, Sharran Srivatsaa is looking to change that for his agents.

Srivatsaa, president of Teles Properties in the Los Angeles area, has taken steps incorporate wellness into his company’s core values and offerings. “Sales takes charisma, quick wit, hard work, and endurance, which all require fitness and mental fortitude,” Srivatsaa says. “These are also core to building great salespeople and an overall successful organization.”

Since making wellness an office priority, Srivatsaa has noticed the rise in professionalism at his company. There is a direct correlation, he says, between overall holistic wellness and the mental acuity necessary for the fast-moving world of real estate.

Here are five tips from Srivatsaa for creating health-conscious workplace initiatives.

1. Srivatsaa suggests assembling a group of agents who believe in the impact of a health program and ask them to help choose speakers or activities. Those people will become your evangelists and help inspire others in the office.

2. Invite health experts and personal trainers to speak at your offices. Teles has hosted conference calls for its agents about health and stress.

3. Keep motivation high by modeling it at the executive level. Srivatsaa does this by hosting a 5 a.m. morning conference call that evolved from his wellness commitment. The short, five-minute call is all about motivation and fulfilling commitments. Approximately 100 people from all over the world take part in the “5 a.m. Club.” “It’s one of those keystone habits that has changed my life,” he says. Teles co-president and founder Peter Hernandez also writes a monthly series called “Keep it Core” covering health topics.

4. Incorporate healthy fundraising activities into your company’s charitable initiatives, such as participating in walks, cycling events, and triathlons.

5. Make healthy food choices at the office, which can start with hydration. If you’re not properly hydrated, your cognitive function decreases. Make sure water coolers and bottled water are accessible to everyone at the office. Ditch the sodas and sugary drinks. When ordering food choices for the brokerage, opt for power foods such as lean proteins, vegetables, fruits, and healthy carbohydrates like sweet potatoes, squash, or beets.
