Smart Home Info Your Clients Want

Released today, the National Association of REALTORS®’ inaugural report on smart homes found that 15 percent of agents say they are receiving questions about smart home technology from their clients. But what items are of most interest to home buyers and sellers?

In terms of the physical devices, 37 percent of REALTORS® surveyed said their clients find smart locks to be very important, followed by lights at 29 percent and thermostats at 26 percent. In terms of the types of technology, around 80 percent of REALTORS® see security and privacy as very or somewhat important.

“More homeowners are adopting smart-home technology and that will likely impact buyers’ purchase decisions in the future,” said NAR President William E. Brown, a real estate professional from Alamo, Calif. and founder of Investment Properties.

The survey also identified an opportunity for real estate professionals to act as a source of much-needed information. Overall, 42 percent of REALTORS® said their clients were interested in smart home devices, with an additional 22 percent interested in whole-home technology, and 3 percent interested in smart home technology for specific rooms. Despite that interest, a full 52 percent of respondents said their clients were not familiar with the types of smart home technology that are available. Real estate pros might want to emphasize the potential energy savings for their clients; four in 10 respondents see both cost savings and energy savings to be very important to their clients.
