The Nation's 5 Biggest Builders

The new-home sector has been digging out of the trenches this year, and the five largest home builders are seeing big increases in building activity.

The following are the five largest players in the home building industry with the highest number of homes sold in the past 12 months:

  1. D.R. Horton: 24,493 (number of homes sold in the past year)
  2. Pulte Homes: 17,221
  3. Lennar: 14,506
  4. NVR: 10,191
  5. KB Home: 6,617

D.R. Horton is dominating the new-home industry at the moment, with sales moving up 34 percent year-over-year.

Some analysts explain the variation among the builders due to the differences in average selling price. Of the top 5 largest builders, D.R. Horton has the lowest average selling price at $253,400 compared to more than $270,000 for the other builders. NVR has the highest average selling price of the five builders at $330,400.
