5 Cities Offering Some of the Best Bargains for Buyers

Inventories of for-sale homes have fallen to record lows in many areas, but some markets are still reporting plenty of choices for home buyers. Plus, in some areas home prices haven’t experienced large increases as in other places this past year.

Realtor.com reports the following five best locales for home buyers for 2013:

  1. Asheville, N.C.: Prices here are down 0.40 percent year-over-year, and properties are taking longer to sell here than other places -- a median of 149 days homes are lingering on the market.
  2. Peoria-Pekin, Ill.: The area has recorded the largest price declines in the past year in the nation -- 14.22 percent lower in median list prices year over year. The area has battled a high unemployment rate of 8.3 percent.
  3. Charleston, W.Va.: Inventories have actually risen here (up 1.03 percent), with more homes for sale than past year. List prices have fallen nearly 10 percent in the past year.
  4. Philadelphia (N.J.): Median list prices are down 5.31 percent year-over-year, and homes are taking 142 days to sell here. Home inventories are still too high here, according to Realtor.com.
