3 Men Charged in Attacks Against Ohio Agents

Three men face charges in Youngstown, Ohio, for luring real estate agents to homes and then robbing them and killing one.

Robert A. Brooks and Grant P. Cooper face charges in connection with the death of real estate professional Vivian Martin, 67, on Sept. 20, 2010. The men are accused of arranging to meet Martin at a home for-sale and then strangling her and setting the home on fire.

Martin’s body had been found in the home that she was listing for sale.

Brooks is scheduled for a pretrial next week, and Cooper is scheduled for a pretrial hearing Feb. 7 stemming from the charges. Both men could face the death penalty if convicted.

In a separate incident, Robert Brooks also faces charges of working with his brother, Paul Brooks, to allegedly rob another real estate agent in Youngstown at gunpoint five days prior to Martin’s death. The brothers reportedly arranged for the agent to show them an apartment building.

Real estate professional Cynthia L. Curaso-Westen with ERA Tri-Sun Real Estate agency in Youngstown told police that two men pointed a gun at her and threatened to kill her if she did not cooperate. The men stole $4, a scarf, and a Bible.

Paul Brooks pleaded guilty this week to the charges he faced in robbing Curaso-Westen. He could face up to 23 years prison for his part.
