A Syndication Bill of Rights for Listings?

The founder of a new Dallas-based nonprofit real estate group is trying to lead a push for a “syndication bill of rights” that aims to provide an industry standard for how listings are displayed on real estate search portals, such as Realtor.com, Zillow, and Trulia. 

National Association of Real Estate Professionals’ founder Ben Caballero says he was motivated to release a “syndication bill of rights” due to the high number of inaccuracies and misleading price estimates found on several real estate Web sites. 

His syndication bill of rights calls for such rights as: 

  • “The right to listing attribution and a direct link to the listing owner’s Web site.” 
  • “The right to bar brokers and agents from advertising on a listing they do not own.” 
  • “The right to prohibit unauthorized use of listing data.”
  • “The right to ensure the publisher implements anti-screen scraping mechanisms.”
  • “The right to prohibit of automated property valuations.” 

Caballero is gathering public comments on his “syndication bill of rights” until Feb. 15.
