More Home Owners on the Move

Home owners are moving again: After hitting a record low last year, the national home mover rate increased from a record low of 11.6 percent in 2011 to 12 percent in 2012, the U.S. Census Bureau reports.

Many Americans who do move aren’t going too far. About 40 percent of the 11.8 million people who moved to another county, only moved less than 50 miles away, according to the Census data.

The most common state-to-state moves in 2011:

  • New York to Florida
  • California to Texas
  • California to Arizona
  • Florida to Georgia
  • New Jersey to New York
  • New York to New Jersey
  • California to Nevada
  • Georgia to Florida
  • California to Washington
  • Texas to California

“The overall mover rate for the nation has increased since a record low,” says Alison Fields, chief of the Census Bureau’s Journey-to-Work and Migration Statistics Branch. “However, compared to previous years, mobility is still low for even our most mobile age group (18 to 29 year olds).”
