Lieutenant Governors Urge Lawmakers to Fix Housing
The National Lieutenant Governors Association (NLGA) is calling on President Obama and lawmakers to take more action to address the housing crisis in order for a more sustainable economic recovery to take hold.
NLGA recently approved a resolution calling on policymakers to do more to fix housing. “The President and Congress [must] act with a sense of urgency to address the nation’s housing crisis in a meaningful and responsible manner, while avoiding any legislation or regulatory actions that will inhibit the recovery of the home building industry,” the group’s resolution stated.
NLGA says preventing foreclosures is a priority for the association.
“Bringing housing issues to the forefront is long overdue, and we are proud of this bipartisan effort and pledge our continual support in turning the housing market around,” says Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki, R-Nev.
NLGA says many obstacles have stymied housing’s recovery, such as the lack of available credit for mortgages and higher downpayment requirements, which are particularly hurting younger household and first-time home buyers.
“There is pent up demand in homes in many parts of the country and America’s home builders stand ready to do their part,” says Barry Rutenberg, the National Association of Builders’ chairman. “However, a full-fledged housing and economic recovery will not take hold until Washington policymakers recognize that housing and home ownership must remain a national priority.”
