Unkempt Lawn May Land You in Jail in New York

In one Long Island, N.Y., village, residents are finding there are stiff penalties for not keeping up with your yardwork: You might end up in jail.

The Massapequa Park village board approved unanimously a law that would fine and possibly jail home owners who don’t maintain their yards.

Lawn offenses may include not mowing the lawn, broken gutters, litter, boarded-up doors and windows, graffiti, and full dumpsters in view.

The fines and potential jail time also stretches to banks that are responsible for the upkeep of foreclosed properties in the area.

Violators will face up to a $1,000 fine for the first offense. Three offenses within five years? You’re heading to jail for 15 days and slapped with a $10,000 fine.

"People take great pride in this village and they take great pride in their property," Massapequa Park Mayor James Altadonna said during the recent village board meeting. "There's a few landowners who don't feel the same way as the rest of us and we've really tried to work with them."
