Walkable cities continues to be a lure to some home buyers. 24/7 Wall St. recently featured the best cities to live without a car. The cities emerging as leaders, not surprisingly, tend to be large cities with dense populations or those with good public transportation systems. The list also took into account cities’ “walk score,” which represents how accessible amenities are to residents when walking, not driving. Here are the five best cities to go car-less, according to 24/7 Wall Street:
1. San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont, Calif.
Transit coverage: 91.7 percent (5th highest)
Jobs reachable in 90 minutes: 34.8 percent (30th highest)
Walk score: 84.9 (2nd highest)
2. Portland-Vancouver-Beaverton, Ore.-Wash.
Transit coverage: 83.5 percent (13th highest)
Jobs reachable in 90 minutes: 39.9 percent (16th highest)
Walk score: 66.3 (13th highest)
3. New York-Northern New Jersey-Long Island, N.Y.-N.J.-Pa.
