Arizona Association Weighs Statewide MLS
Board members at the Arizona Association of REALTORS® will vote Aug. 8 on whether to acquire the state’s largest multiple listing service, Tempe-based Arizona Regional Multiple Listing Service Inc. (ARMLS), which is viewed as the first step in bringing it closer to its goal of creating a statewide MLS, Inman News reports.
The association has reached a tentative agreement, which awaits board approval, to acquire ARMLS for $4.75 million. Association proponents of the deal then envision eventually other REALTOR® associations in the state signing on to a statewide MLS -- Arizona MLS -- over time.
“The topic of a statewide MLS has been widely debated in Arizona and across the country for years,” according to a business plan created proponents in the state of an Arizona MLS. The report also noted: "This will not happen overnight. Some MLSs are likely to remain as they are today as determined by their leadership. The majority, we believe, will find compelling reasons to join Arizona MLS.”
Currently, Arizona has 14 separate MLSs.
Proponents say a statewide MLS would offer a larger, stronger system that would be able to better compete against third-party publishers, such as Zillow and Trulia. The report also notes that a statewide MLS would be able to advertise members’ listings statewide and prevent members from having to pay multiple MLS fees in advertising their listings.
The California Association of REALTORS® also has been attempting to launch a statewide MLS, under a merged company called California Regional MLS Inc. (CRMLS).
