Buyer's Guide: 2009 Information Security Systems

If you aren't taking steps to protect your clients' data, you are putting both them and your business at risk. Here are some tips and tools to help you protect information in cyberspace.

Why You Need It

Buyers and sellers routinely trust their real estate agents with sensitive personal and financial information: names and birth dates, addresses, employers, mortgage and loan applications. If you were providing such details to someone else, what would you expect them to do to keep it from prying eyes? Your response is the starting point for developing a security strategy to protect client data.

Loss or theft of hardware or a security breach could cause untold misery for your clients, and do irreparable damage to your professional reputation. If you solicit and accept their information, accept your responsibility to protect it.

Security doesn’t seem such a big deal until it’s breached. If that happens, you risk losing your clients along with their data. Take steps now to make that a remote possibility.
