2012 Smartphones: Terms You’ll Hear
4G LTE: This stands for fourth generation. Significantly faster than the prior 3G standard, 4G networks are being deployed to meet the voice and data communications demands of mobile hardware, including smartphones.
AMOLED: An acronym that stands for active-matrix organic light-emitting diode, this refers to an advanced display technology used in some smartphones that offers improvements in screen resolution while reducing power needs. It may also be described as Super AMOLED.
Android: The smartphone operating system developed by Google, Android has been released in several versions, each described by a name and a number. The latest version of Android is 4.0, also referred to as Ice Cream Sandwich. Previous versions still in use include v2.2, Froyo; v2.3, Gingerbread; and v3.0, Honeycomb, for tablets.
Dual-core or quad-core processor: A computer processor with multiple cores, each capable of handling its own stream of data, to increase the speed and overall performance of the smartphone.
LED flash: A type of camera flash found on some smartphones that uses energy-efficient light-emitting diodes.
mAh: Milliampere-hours, a standardized measure of the amount of power a battery can hold when fully charged. The higher this rating, the more powerful the battery, but how long it lasts actually depends on how you use the phone and the features you use.
Unlocked phone: A phone not tied to any particular carrier’s service.
Windows Phone: This refers to both Microsoft’s operating system for smartphones and the smartphones compatible with it.
