“The more people you know, the more business you’ll do.”

What makes her special: Mueller overcame a shyness that was so acute, she had trouble looking prospects in the eye when she started in the business five years ago. Today she’s the president of her local association and teaches orientation classes to rookies. She’s also a power networker who closed $24.6 million in sales in 2002. A hefty share of that stemmed from new-construction sales.

How’d she turn things around? She gained confidence by attending local and state association events with her mentors—two salespeople in her office. “Going to events with them helped me break into the circles of people there,” she says. “In orientation classes, I tell people they have to get involved and meet people.” And she helps, telling new salespeople from her office “if you want to go anywhere but don’t want to go alone, just ask me.”

Education counts: Mueller believes in the value of designations. “They empower you with knowledge,” she says, “and the more you know, the more you’ll beat out the competition.”
